I will be hibernating my LinkedIn account.
I am too fed up with the constant sentiment of jobs-as-social-media which flood the front page of the platform. I am tired of seeing corporations promoting their technology and ignoring their own issues. I am sick of seeing people posting about corporations or reposting or what not, adding their own commentary but not being constructive, simply piggybacking off the success of others in the hopes of views.
I am sick of this push towards generative AI. I want to shift work into live production, live services, multiplayer games; careers which I do not see a path in pursuing, out of hundreds of connections which mean little more than an increase in an integer on this platform.
I am absolutely sick and tired of the sponsored posts and advertisements in my DMs. I say I own my own company, give myself the title of CEO, and weekly I get connection requests from people who at best I have no clue who they are, at worst only want to connect to sell me their b2b product or service. People who pay LinkedIn get access to my private email addresses to send me constant spam, as I have no other explanation for the work promo spam I get in my inbox.
I am going to hibernate my LinkedIn account in protest of LinkedIn, owned by Microsoft, who built up a social culture around jobs, profiting off the thing which makes or breaks people's lives.
People have said that LinkedIn does not help with job searching, that its only benefit is making connections. Considering how pointless I see LinkedIn connections, I don't see any reason to continue to use this platform, until it improves: less sponsored chat messages; connection organization; emphasis on one-on-one communication instead of social media.
I will state in future job applications that I have hibernated my LinkedIn account, and if that job refuses to hire me because of it, then I would not have wanted to work there in the first place. Jobs should be about finding the best person who can do the work at hand, not someone who knows someone or someone who uses a social media platform to stay up to date with the company.
I want Bluesky to be a starting place for new connections: open source platform, independently owned, rising from the ongoing disaster of Twitter, yet looking for a purpose among other social media giants. More importantly, Bluesky is general purpose and does not push advertisements in any way.
Bluesky has the tools for connections: following people, private chats, custom feeds and lists, even moreso than LinkedIn. The tools are there, they need to be shaped to better suit professional connections today.
I need to refocus development with Quantonium and The Laser Games, find the motivation to pursue more creative projects, before I consider doing research. LinkedIn will not help with that.
